Would anyone eat this fried cabbage with crispy bacon, sweet onions, and fresh garlic? Absolutely! This simple Southern-style side dish is packed with smoky, savory flavor and made with affordable ingredients. The cabbage becomes tender and slightly caramelized, while the bacon adds a delicious crunch that makes every bite irresistible.
Ingredients
- 1 large head green cabbage, chopped
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/4 cup chicken broth or water, if needed
Instructions
- Cook the bacon:Â In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the pan.
- Sauté the onion: Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
- Add the garlic:Â Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
- Cook the cabbage:Â Add the chopped cabbage in batches if necessary. Stir well to coat it in the bacon grease, onion, and garlic.
- Season:Â Sprinkle with smoked paprika, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add salt carefully because the bacon is already salty.
- Let it soften: Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender with some golden, caramelized edges. Add a splash of broth or water if the pan gets too dry.
- Finish and serve:Â Stir in the cooked bacon and optional butter. Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving warm.
Tips for the Best Fried Cabbage
- Don’t rush it:Â Let the cabbage develop golden edges for extra flavor.
- Keep the bacon crispy:Â Reserve some bacon to sprinkle on top just before serving.
- Add a little tang:Â A splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice brightens the dish.
- Make it spicy:Â Add cayenne pepper or extra red pepper flakes.
- Want it richer? Finish with a small pat of butter.
