These luscious Patty Melts are a beautiful crossover of grilled cheese and burgers. Positively to die for with crispy, golden brown rye bread filled with a simple patty, golden brown onions, and Swiss cheese.
I always use rye as it is a classic option but feel free to use any varieties of bread. After getting everything ready in a snap, it is time to assemble the Patty Melts. When done, slice in half, serve as is or with some chips on the side, and an ice-cold beer.
PATTY MELTS
Ingredients
1 stick butter
1 whole large onion, halved and sliced
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
salt and pepper, to taste
5 dashes Worcestershire sauce
8 slices Swiss cheese
8 slices rye bread
How to make Patty Melts
Step 1: Melt 2 tbsp butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced onions to the skillet and slowly cook for about 20 to 25 minutes while occasionally stirring until the onions are soft and golden brown.
Step 2: Place the ground beef in a medium bowl, Worcestershire, and season with salt & pepper. Mix well, then make into four patties.
Step 3: In another skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the patties in the middle of the skillet and sear both sides until completely done.
Step 4: To assemble the Patty Melts: Lay a slice of bread, top with a slice of cheese, then the hamburger patty, 1/4 of the cooked onions, another slice of cheese, and top with the other slice of bread. Now, melt 2 tbsp butter on a clean griddle or skillet. On medium heat, grill the sandwiches until golden brown, then rake the sandwiches out of the skillet. Add the rest of the 2 tbsp butter into the skillet and cook the other side of the sandwiches until golden brown, crisp, and the cheese has melted.
Step 5: When done, slice the sandwiches in half and enjoy immediately.
